Community Kitchen
We occasionally help out at Urban Ministries' Community Kitchen in downtown Durham. DMC members have filled in to serve meals when other volunteers have canceled on short notice.
Share Your Christmas
Each year, DMC participates in "Share Your Christmas", a program of Durham Social Services, which gives needy families a reason to celebrate the season. DMC is assigned one or two Durham families, and playgroups each "adopt" one person to buy new gifts for.
This is one of the most satisfying projects we do as a club. These single, working mothers struggle to get everything they need for their children. One person can only do so much, but a group of mothers can make the holidays magical for whole families.
Welcome Baby
Welcome Baby is a local organization associated with Durham County Cooperative Extension. They serve families in the Durham area. One of their projects is a "Giving Closet" where needy families can select gently used clothing for babies and children (to age 7). Welcome Baby is always in need of clothing — especially jackets and coats — and maternity clothes for expectant moms.
